Gilbert John Martin

(urodził się 25 października 1936 roku, w Lonynie)- brytyjski historyk, autor ponad 80 książek, m. in. poświęconych historii Żydów i tematyce Holokaustu. Uznany za pioniera w dziedzinie tworzenia atlasów historycznych. Największe uznanie przyniosły mu biografie Winstona Churchilla.

W 1960 roku ukończył Magdalen College, zdobywając tytuł bakałarza (licencjata) w dziedzinie historii. Dalsze studia podjął w St Antony's College w Oxfordzie. W 1962r. został profesorem w Merton College w Oxfordzie.

Na zaproszenie Randolpha Churchilla brał udział w pracach nad biografią jego ojca Winstona Churchilla. Uczestniczył w pracach jego zespołu w Suffolk przygotowującego pierwsze dwa tomy biografii Churchilla. Po śmierci Randolpha Churchilla podjął się redakcji pozostałych sześciu tomów:

Gilbert podkreśla rolę dokumentów źródłowych w pracy historyka.

W 1990 roku został odznaczony Orderem Imperium Brytyjskiego, a w 1995 roku otrzymał tytuł szlachecki za „zasługi dla brytyjskiej historiografii i stosunków międzynarodowych”. W 1999 roku otrzymał tytuł profesorski Oxford University za “całokształt opublikowanych prac”.
