The ‘Memory in Stone’ project in Grodzisk Mazowiecki
On September 27th, pupils of the Junior High School No.2 in Grodzisk Mazowiecki, together with their peers at the Lauder-Morash Junior High School in Warsaw, completed the ‘Memory in Stone’ project.
In the Jewish cemetery in Grodzisk Mazowiecki, Krzysztof Bielawski, a Virtual Shtetl cooperator, familiarized all participants with the history of the cemetery. He talked about grave symbols, funeral precepts and their significance in Judaism. Afterwards, the pupils started to document the cemetery.
They removed leaves from tombstones, and then counted, labeled and photographed them. Results of their work will be published on the Virtual Shtetl portal soon.
The project was carried by the Virtual Shtetl project of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews with the support of the TP Group.
