Preserve a Cemetery!

The Virtual Shtetl has been engaged in the project of documenting Jewish cemeteries in Poland and beyond its borders. Visit the Memory in Stone section to check out the results of our activities. The action consists of taking stock and taking detailed pictures of all matzevot which have been preserved in these cemeteries. Wherever possible, we will also draft a cemetery layout which later can be designated on a Google map. We also translate the inscriptions of the matzevot into English.

Thus far, we have successfully created detailed documentation and descriptions of several cemeteries in the Mazowieckie Province and of one cemetery in Belarus. In order to continue with this important work, we need your support. To help us to "preserve" a cemetery, please, send us the name of the town to this e-mail address: sztetl@jewishmuseum.org.pl. Please pecify the place which is of interest to you and we will estimate the preliminary costs of all works in a given cemetery. The costs will depend on the distance that our researchers need to travel, on the number of matzevot located in the cemetery and on the condition of the entire graveyard. For example, the cost describing a small cemetery near Warsaw is PLN 1,700 for the documentation and PLN 1,350 for the translation of the inscriptions.

Should you decide to support this project by giving at least one donation, you will be honoured as a “Cemetery Guardian” on a special page relating to your specified city, town or village. Here, you’ll be able to publish a dedication to your family or write a few words about the motivation that has moved you to join our project. This information will also be published on the recently opened Memory in Stone section and on page of the cemetery that you helped us to document. Additionally, the same information will be published onFurthermore, information about your support will be published on the special the website honouring private donors who have supported our portal. Additionally, we will keep you updated with regard to the progress of our common project.
