Leo Baeck - The most famous Jew from Leszno

A two-day international conference entitled “Leo Baeck (1873-1956). The most famous Jew from Leszno” starts in Leszno on September 27. It is dedicated to Leo Baeck, a philosopher and a rabbi who lived in the years 1873-1956. Leszno was Baeck’s hometown. He grew up and began his education here, passing his matura exam in Jan Amos Komensky Junior High School. Baeck continued his education in Wrocław and Berlin where he earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy. He was an outstanding scientist. Today this unusual personality is famous all over the world. Numerous institutes in Jerusalem, London and New York bear his name. Even one of asteroids does.

A new commemorative plaque will be attached to a wall of a tenement house at 34 Chrobrego Street where Leo Baeck lived. Lectures take place on Monday at 11-3.30PM and on Wednesday at 10-12 noon, in a building at Narutowicza Street where an old synagogue was formerly located.

Several events connected with the conference:

Sunday, 6.00 PM – The District Museum in Leszno: a concerto for violin, cello and piano; the repertoire includes melodies from the district of Kazimierz in Cracow. Free admittance.

Monday, September 27 – an exhibition of unique Leo Baeck souvenirs on a constant exposition entitled “Jews in Leszno” in the old synagogue. Opened from September 27 to November 30, 2010.

5.00 PM – unveiling of the plaque on the house of Leo Baeck, the tenement house at 34 Chrobrego Street

6.00 PM – screening of a film entitled “Jews in Leszno”, verbal and musical staging by the Lyceum number 3, Kościuszki Square

Conference organizers are: the Municipality of Leszno, the District Museum in Leszno and Jan Amos Komenksy State School of Higher Vocational Education in Leszno.
