Great Synagogue in Katowice

The air exhibition about the history of the synagogues and prayer houses in Katowice was presented on 21st of September in order to celebrate the 110th anniversary of the opening of the Great Synagogue.

The exhibition on Mariacka Street includes 20 display charts. The most interesting elements are reproductions of original projects and sketches of the Great Synagogue coming from the city archive. Thanks to them, one can be familiar with the construction and general look of this monumental building, which has been known only from postcards.

The Great Synagogue built in Katowice in 1900 at Mickiewicza Street was one of the most characteristic buildings in the city. The edifice, which could accommodate 1 000 people, was designed by architects Hugo and Max Gruenfelds. It combined neo-Gothic, neo-Renaissance and Moorish styles. Richly decorated dome, which was covering the main prayer room, and soaring neo-Gothic windows distinguished it from the other buildings.

The synagogue was destroyed by Germans on 4th of September 1939. Now in its place there is an obelisk commemorating the Jewish inhabitants of Katowice murdered by the Nazis.
