Lapidaire In Międzychód

Ilustracja
A project of a new lapidaire located near the railway station has been proposed in Międzychód. So far, more than 30 matzevas have been going into ruin in the courtyard of the museum.

Before the war, a Jewish cemetery was situated in Międzychód, between Kurpińskiego and Wiatraczna Streets. During the war the cemetery was destroyed, and the bed of the river Warta was covered with tombstone plates. Several years ago matzevas were removed to the courtyard of the museum and they are still lying there. At some time many famous people were connected with Międzychód, such as Hugo Hisz, the composer believed to be the father of the Berlin operetta, or Herman and Leonard Tietz, the founders of the chain store later known as “Hertie”.
