Hassids in Lezajsk

The 7th Meeting of Three Cultures in Lezajsk will take place on 12th of September 2010 on Plac Targowy in the old part of the town. The event is connected to the history of the subcarpathian region, once inhabited by three nations: Poles, Jews and Rusyns. Originally, the event functioned under the name of Days of the Jewish Culture, but due to its popularity the organizers decided to broaden its formula. The main aim of the festival is the promotion of the music characteristic of Polish, Jewish and Ukrainian tradition.

The organizers of the event aspire to change the stereotypical thinking of the nations formerly inhabiting Leżajsk. They want to present their cultural achievements, as well as to make the public aware that Poles, Rysyns and Jews share common cultural heritage.

Each culture will be represented by renowned Polish and foreign groups. The following artists will be performing: Folk Group of Song and Dance “ŚLĄSK”, Folk Group “Krywań” from Zakopane, Male Choir and Cameral Orchestra “Sokół” from Niżańskie Cultural Center in Nisko, vocal formation Pikkardiyska Tertsiya from Ukraine, Justyna Steczkowska with band ( “Alkimja” program). During concerts, the audience will have the opportunitiy to learn Polish, Ukrainian and Jewish dances taught by professional dance teachers.

Moreover, there will be: photography exhibition “Jeden świat – trzy kultury” (One world – three cultures) prepared by Photography Club “Opticos”, exhibition of documents and collections “Leżajsk na przełomie wieków” (Leżajsk on the turn of the centuries), presentation and tasting of traditional dishes of Polish, Jewish and Ukrainian cuisine; and a fair of handicraft artists. The organizers plan also a meeting with Jerzy Fąfara aimed at promoting publication of his books: “Chasydzi w Leżajsku” (Hasidic Judaists in Leżajsk) and “ Leżajskie Legendy” (Leżajsk`s Legends).
