How the ghetto in Bedzin was liquidated
The monument commemorating Jews from Bedzin
An official from Będzin had an extraordinary idea concerning commemorating the tragedy of Jews from that town. On 11th of September pupils will stage the ghetto’s dissolution on Kazimierza Wielkiego Square (Plac Kazimierza Wielkiego).
“We will present the last hours of the ghetto, including the defense of the bunker by the members of the Jewish Combat Organization and deportation of Jews to the railway platform. The viewers will see individuals like Frumka Płotnicka, who protected the bunker, and Hans Dreier, who made selection. I will also play one of the German torturers,” said Adam Szydłowski, the initiator and main organizer of the event. Young people are very engaged in the preparations. “We learn about Będzin at school. A show is much more interesting than regular classes,” said Dawid Kukuryk from the 5th class. The eldest pupils, divided into pairs, will play parents, and the youngest will portray their children.
The show commemorates the deportation of 2,400 Jews who were taken from Będzin to extermination camps. On 1st of August, 1943 the final dissolution of the ghetto started. Its residents were sent mainly to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Not even 900 out of 3,000 Jews came back to Będzin after the war.
Last year the encroachment of Wehrmacht soldiers was enacted. But this time the performance evokes protests. – Playing the battles, armies marches is something different playing mass murder – said Jaroslaw J. Szczepanski, President of the Union of Jewish Associations of B'nai-B'rith Humanitarian Polin. – It is possible that the thrill-lovers will soon decide to rent concentration camps and organize outdoor games near the gas chambers and crematoria.
However, the organizers did not intend to give up their planes. – Each participant of our project is a volunteer. Moreover, the educators will be present during the rehearsals – assured Adam Szydlowski – Any child will participate in dramatic scenes, because there are no such scenes in a scenario – he added.
