The winning project

The Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk is to be designed by Kwadrat Studio. According to the project, a large part of the museum will be underground. Above the ground, there will be a crooked triangular tower. ‘The visitors begin the tour around the museum from the basement, representing the hell of war. Proceeding to the tower, visitors will view a panorama of Gdansk’, explained the head of Kwadrat Studio, Jacek Droszcz.

Two hundred and forty entrants from 33 countries participated in the competition which was settled on the 1st of September. Piotr Laskowski & Partners from Warsaw won the second prize. They proposed building a museum similar to the old Gdansk houses. The third prize was awarded to the Greek company ‘Beta Plan’. Their project resembled the bunkers and blocks from a concentration camp.

The jury, which included many well-known architects, had no doubt that the project of Kwadrat Studio is superior. Judges stressed that the awarded project is innovative and blends perfectly with the atmosphere of the city. The building will certainly be a new icon of Gdansk. ‘This project will inspire the imagination of people around the world’ said Daniel Libeskind, an American architect, the creator of the Jewish Museum in Berlin.

Construction at Wałowa Street is expected to start in 2012, and the Museum should open two years later.
