Headquarters of Jewish community in Katowice

The prayer house in Katowice received the name of Haskel Besser. The ceremony took place in the headquarters of Jewish community (3 Maja Street) on the 1st of September. Haskel Besser (1923-2010) was born in Katowice. In 1939 he escaped to Palestine and in 1949 he moved to New York. He achieved renown as a leader of the American Agudath Israel movement, where he helped reestablish American Jewish Orthodoxy in the U.S. Afterwards, he helped to rebuild Jewish life in Poland towards the end of the communist era, partnering with Ronald S. Lauder. He encouraged Michael Schudrich to come to Warsaw.

After 1989, when there were neither synagogues nor prayer books and we did not know our religion, he was teaching us authentic tradition. He was one of the leaders who reestablished Jewish life in Poland – said Włodzimierz Kac, the head of Jewish community in Katowice.

The photos taken during the ceremony are just available at Virtual Shtetl.
