Virtual Shtetl Portal enriched by nearly 530 new pictures! The copies of the unique photographs were obtained from the collection of Jewish Historical Institute of which Jan Jagielski has the custody. Photos showing the remnants of Jewish culture in the Małopolska, Podkarpacie and Świętokrzyskie regions, were made mosty in 1960s. So far, the portal displayed only the pre-war, war and contemporary photographs. Obtained images have completed a gap in the iconography collection of the Virtual Shtetl.

The publication of this valuable collections was possibile thanks to the cooperation of Jewish Historical Institute and Museum of the History of Polish Jews. Therefore, we would like to thank Eleonora Bergman, the director of the Jewish Historical Institute, and Edyta Kurek and Artur Pałasiewicz, deputy directors, who enabled scanning and publishing the photographs. Special thanks to Jan Jagielski, who for decades has been collecting photographs presenting the heritage of Polish Jews, and he has been actively engaged protection of monuments of Jewish culture and history. Since 1994, he has been a chairman of the Social Committee for Protection of Cemeteries and Monuments of Jewish Culture. He supported the work of young interns of the Museum, Jakub Supera and Karolina Koprowska, the winners of the competition organized by Shalom Foundation. The interns scanned over 500 photos. In addition, thanks to the numerous conversations with Jan Jagielsk, theyi became familiar with the specific characteristics and history of the images.

Now you can also discover these extraordinary photographs. All photos received thanks to the courtesy of the Jewish Historical Institute are now available on the website of Virtual Shtetl.
