The cemetery of conciliation

The gate to the Jewish cemetery in Bialystok

A group of young people from Germany and Israel renovated the Jewish cemetery in Wschodnia Street in Białystok. The Center for Citizenship Education Poland-Israel (Centrum Edukacjii Obywatelskiej Polska-Izrael) together with the Action Reconciliation Service for Peace (Aktion Sühnezeichen Friedensdienste) have organized the arrival of foreign students. The latter one is an organization that units young Germans who work in the Jewish cemeteries in Poland as a sign of atonement for the sins of their ancestors who were responsible for the Holocaust.

The main goal of this visit is to educate the young generation. Both Germans and Israelis get to know the history of our country and the Jewish community, who lived here in large numbers before the Second World War. It was a great experience for the descendants of the Holocaust victims to meet Germans in Białystok. Although they are separated by a painful history, young people are able to establish sincere contacts. Surely enough, this meeting means one move forward of the conciliation process among the three nations.
