The next level in repairing the inscription

Ilustracja
The work schedule of repairing the inscription "Arbeit macht frei", which was stolen on 18 December 2009. The conservators haven't included there the information about finishing their work yet. Bartosz Bartyzel from the National Museum Auschwitz – Birkenau said that precision is the most important criterion during coservators' work. It is highly probable that reparation and conservation will continue until autumn. At first, workers will do thermal tests of safe flattening of each element of the construction, because thieves while cutting the inscription twisted its parts.Next the process of flattening will be done, and then they will strenghten these weakened parts. After that they will connect the parts into one. In the end the inscription will be given color consolidation and protection from the corrosion.

The conservators from the museum precisely examined the inscription after it was given back. This work took a few months. The object was scanned in 3D technology, the conservators registered changes in its structure, they analysed the condition of protection layers, the welds condition and examined the minimal damages. These damages were serious, the inscription condition was very bad, not mentioning the fact that it was cut into pieces.

Today, nobody is able to answer unambigiously the questions abuot the future of the inscription. Will it be placed on the main gate of the former German concentration camp, where it is replaced by its copy or will it become the element of the museum exposition inside? The key meaning will have the museum conservators' opinion. The final decision will be made by the director of the museum Piotr M.A. Cywiński after consulting with the International Oświęcim Council. The next session of the IOC is planned on the November 2010.
