Honorary Citizenship of Warsaw for Ziuta Hartman.

On Saturday, July 31, 2010, during the yearly ceremonial session of the Council of Warsaw, which took place at the Royal Castle, honorary citizenships of the Capital were awarded. One of the honoured persons was Ziuta Hartman. Born in Kielce, she took part in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and is one of the last members of the Jewish Combat Organisation still alive.

On behalf of Ms. Hartman, the award was received by her sons, Haim and Yeruda. Presenters emphasised that everyone who had fought in the uprising deserves equal honour -- including members of the Jewish Military Union.

Ziuta Hartman was born on October 5, 1922 in Kielce. She lived in 20, Młynarska Street (today: Mielczarskiego). She attended a Jewish school until the outbreak of war. Due to the outbreak of the war Ziuta was unable to complete the matura exam. A Pole denounced her to the Gestapo as she was not wearing the Jewish armband.

Later, Ziuta moved to Radom and then, to Warsaw. She took part in the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. She passed through Umschlagplatz and was deported to Treblinka. Next, she was displaced to the camp in Skarżysko Kamienna and, in 1944, to Leipzig, where she worked in a weapons factory. There she lived to see the liberation -- a few days before the war officially ended.

Once free, she resettled in Kielce. Four months later, she and her husband crossed the border. Ever since, she has not been in Poland. She lives in Israel near Tel Aviv.
