The interior of the synagogue in Orla

The synagogue in Orla has been turned over to the Foundation for Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland. It needs general renovation.

The synagogue in Orla was founded about 1750. It combines the elements of baroque and classical style. The interior was decorated with polychrome rich in ornaments. However, only the fragments of these beautiful paintings preserved. During the Second World War Germans turned synagogue into stable and warehouse. Afterwards, there was fertilizers’ store. In 1988 the building was covered by the new roof, but it was still closed.

Two years ago the place revived since the exhibitions and occasional concerts were organized there. Four hundred people came at the opening of the first exhibition "The synagogue in the background". The festival of the Belarusian Sung Poetry and the Festival "Bard’s Autumn" were also popular. Last year the documentary movies were shown. Among them, there was "Polin" directed by Jolanta Dylewska.

The Foundation hopes that after a restoration the synagogue will be interesting for tourist as much as newly renovated synagogues in Zamość and Łańcut. Still it will be the center of cultural events. The Museum of Orla Jews is set to be established there. Moreover, the inhabitants of Orla plan to organize Klezmer Festival regularly.
