DRUMLA, the association for Podlasie region, was awarded a diploma for saving Jewish heritage in Poland. For 7 years the members of the association in Podlasie have conducted projects in an attempt to preserve the memory of the region's multicultural past.

The annual ceremony of awarding honorary diplomas to Poles who rescue Jewish Heritage, was initiated by Michael H. Traison Foundation. Co-organizers of the event are: the Israeli Embassy in Warsaw, the Jewish Historical Institute, the Museum of the History of Polish Jews, the Jewish Community in Krakow and the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland.

This year, 10 people and organizations working to protect and promote Jewish culture were given diplomas by the Israeli Ambassador. One of those who were awarded was Drumla Association. ‘This is a very valuable award for us’, said Filip Pazderski, President of the association. ‘We are pleased that the Jewish community in Poland appreciated our work. It encourages us to continue our projects’.

Drumla has worked in Podlasie since 2003, conducting educational projects for young people. In 2006, it organized workshops for young people to explore subjects related to the history and culture of Krynki. In 2007 and in 2008, Drumla organized two international camps for Polish, German and Belorussian students. Young people cleaned the Jewish cemetery in Krynki, made documentation of tombstones and restoration of the color of graves. Moreover, they collected stories about the region's past. Last year Drumla published the collection of memories of the oldest inhabitants of Krynki. The book describes the neighborly relations between Poles, Belorussians, Jews and Tatars.
