Monument of Umschlagplatz, the place of deportation from Warsaw ghetto

On the 22nd of July the Gross Aktion commenced, which was the deportation of hundreds and thousands of Warsaw Jews to gas chambers in Treblinka. The Judenrat, an administrative body totally depended on Germans, was ordered to send 6 000 people to the reloading point every day. Adam Czerniaków, the head of the Judenrat, committed suicide to protest against this order. He left a note, reading “They demand me to kill children of my nation with my own hands. I have nothing to do but to die.”

From the 22nd of July to the 21st of August, more than 265,000 Jews were deported from Warsaw ghetto and murdered. Before deportation, people were gathered at the Umschlagplatz. Located on Stawki Street at the corner of Dzika Street, Umschlagplatz was the reloading point where products were delivered to the ghetto from the arian side of the city. There is now an Umschlagplatz Monument upon which hundreds of Jewish names have been inscribed to commemorate the victims of the Gross Aktion.
