Death Fort in Pomiechowek

AWM (Army Property Agency) is set to sell ‘Death Fort in Pomiechowek. This decision raised the protest of the Heritage Conservator and the Jewish Community of Warsaw.
During the Second World War, Germans established a prison in the fortress. Afterwards, there was a ghetto and a concentration camp. Some sources revealed that in this place, there had been more than 100 thousand people. Moreover, several thousands were killed in mass executions organized by the Gestapo. The victims were Poles and Jews from nearby towns (Nowy Dwór, Płońsk, Sierpc, Żuromin), as well as Soviet POWs. In 1952 r. the terrain was taken by the Polish Army. Despite the fact that the war ended 65 years ago, these places of torment are not properly marked or commemorated. There is only a small monument and information plaque near the road which leads to the fort. In 2009, the fort was inscribed on the list of vintage buildings in Warsaw. On April 2010, AWM decided to put the fort up for auction for the sum 1.3 ml of zlotys. There are already a few prospective buyers.
The Heritage Conservator is concerned that a new owner might conduct commercial activity which would harm the memorial of the victims. She views the selling of the fort to a private individual or company as completely inadmissible. The Conservator proposes creating an historical park and a trail of memory in this place. Her initiative is supported by the Jewish Community which appeals the giving of the area from the tender procedure for sale and is ready to participate in commemorating the tragic history of the “Death Fort”.
