A barn in Zawada

On the 11th of July, the performer Rafal Betlejewski, who is well-known because of his project, “I miss you Jew”, burned down a barn with some pieces of paper which symbolized malevolent thoughts towards Jews. The happening “The barn is burning”, referred to the 69th anniversary of Jedwabne pogrom, was organized in Zawada village near Tomaszow Mazowiecki.

During the performance, Betlejewski read the names of the people who ordered symbols of malevolent thoughts; and then he took the papers to the barn. Afterwards, he poured petrol on the barn, came inside and closed the door. Then, he set fire to the barn and he went out from the other side of the building. The barn was destroyed after several minutes. The performance was viewed by people from Zawada and also residents from the nearest villages.

Betlejewski said that his performance was related to the Jedwabne pogrom, but he wanted to portray the tragedy in unique way. He said that he was there to show that Poles can symbolically change the place appointed by history, the place outside the barn. He wanted to symbolically enter the barn. Betlejewski’s performance raised a discussion among Poles and Jews.
