Old Synagogue in Chelm

The exhibition showing Jewish life in pre-war Chelm is set to be open in Chelm’s Museum on September 2010. The curators of the exhibition are asking to bring old photographs which display local Jews. Before the Second World War Chelm was one of the biggest Jewish population centers in Lublin region. In 1939 there were 33, 622 inhabitants, including 14, 995 Jews (44.6%). There were two synagogues, a prayer house, 45 cheders, two baths, two mikvahs, an orphanage, an elderly home and a cemetery, which belonged to the Jewish community in Chelm. Moreover, five Jewish newspapers were published. The Chelm’s shtetl disappeared during the Second World War. In 1942 Jewish population was sent to the concentration camp in Sobibor and killed by Nazis.

We do not have many photos of Jewish inhabitants, but we hope that some pictures will be find in family albums – said Beata Mojska-Zając from Chelm’s Museum – Now we are given photos from family fates and student cards. We are still looking for pictures which display the interiors of the synagogues, the streets of Chelm and everyday Jewish life.

These, who would like to deliver photos, are asked to contact with the Museum. Phone nr: +48 82 565 30 35 or +48 82 565 26 93.
