The tomb of Kielce pogrom victims

Jan Karski Association has the pleasure of inviting you to the ceremony of unveiling the renovated tomb of Kielce pogrom victims. The ceremony, which coincides with the 64th anniversary of the pogrom, commences near the Menorah Monument in Kielce on the 5th of July at 12.00.

The 4th of July 1946 was the most sorrowful day in the thousand year history of Kielce. Forty people were killed simply because of their Jewish identity. That tragic event brought disgrace upon Kielce and induced the creation of the stereotype of Polish anti-Semitism. Jan Karski Association has been contending with this stereotype, and with all manifestations of anti-Semitism. In this regard, the association established the Menorah Monument and the statue of Jan Karski. The upcoming ceremony is another important initiative.

In an effort to worthily commemorate the pogram victims, the association in conjunction with private individuals, shall unveil the new tombstone. The names of the victims have been inscribed on the main plaque of the tomb. Moreover, a brief history of the pogrom is translated in four languages: Yiddish, Hebrew, Polish and English. The tombstone is decorated by the symbolic Magen David.

PROGRAM OF THE CEREMONY

At midday, the Memorial March is to commence near the Menorah Monument (commemorating the life and death of Jews from Kielce). The procession will pass the monument of pogrom victims at Piotrkowska Str. and the place of crime at Planty Str. 7/9. There will be united prayers offered by the Polish Council of Christians and Jews. The procession will then proceed to the statue of Jan Karski, (Sienkiewicza Str.) and to the cemetery at Pakosz district. The main ceremony is to start there at 13.00.
