Jewish cemeteries: Young students from Białystok’s Electrical Trades School spent their last holidays cleaning the Jewish cemetery on that city’s Wschodnia street . The project was the brainchild of the school’s history teacher, Andrzej Miecznik, who had twenty student volunteers to help him. The plan was to clean the tombstones (macewas). However the students realised that the entire cemetery needed a clean-up, overgrown as it was by grass, bushes and tree roots. Using secateurs, spades and even axes, the students removed quite a deal of the overgrowth. Lucyna Lisowska from Gmina Wyznaniowa Żydowska na Białostocczyźnie (Białystok Jewish Community) expressed her appreciation for the project.
