Delays in the building of the Museum of Silesian Jews

The museum at the Jewish cemetery in Gliwice was planned to be ready in the first half of 2015. The deadline, however, will not be kept.

The House of the Worlds – since this will be the official name of the new museum – is organized in the historic shtiebel at the Jewish cemetery in Gliwice. The exposition will be devoted to the history of the Jews of Upper Silesia.

The renovation of the building and its adaptation to the needs of a museum began last year. Initially, it has been planned to complete the works in the middle of 2015.

Several days ago, however, the Gliwice authorities informed that they had managed to carry out about 70% of the works so far. The main reason for a delay was a significant erosion of the plaster at the former ceremonial chamber and in consequence, destruction of the paintings. A technology of the maintenance works had to be altered and in effect, a new project of restoring the polychrome had to be developed.

While carrying out renovation works in old buildings there is often risk of having to face unpredicted problems. This was the case, for example, when the Museum of the Warsaw Praga was built. Dampness of the walls has significantly multiplied costs then and extended the duration of investment projects.
