Shkhanim - preserved memories from Augustów

On 22 May 2015, the Mayor of Augustów, Wojciech Walulik, invites the general public to the commemoration ceremonies and meetings dedicated to the Local Jewish community.

At 2.00 p. m. at the Cemetery of the Victims of the Jewish Nation on Waryńskiego Street, the matzevot which during World War II were used by German orders for the construction of steps on the properties at Kasztanowa Street, will be unveiled. The tombstones come probably from the cemetery which was once located near today’s Zarzecze Street. However, because the lapidarium which is located within its confines has been devastated several times, the decision was made to put up the matzevot at the cemetery functioning in the years 1941-1942 within the borders of the ghetto. A prayer and a speech by the Mayor are foreseen during the ceremony.

At 3.30 p. m., at the Municipal Cultural Centre, Marcin Bartosiewicz from the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage will elaborate on the history of the Jews of Augustów and a delegate for Białystok and the Podlaskie Province of the Jewish Religious Community in Warsaw will tell the audience about the Jewish burial customs. The participants will also have an opportunity to tour the exhibition of photographs “On Camera of Judel Rotsztejn”.

At 6.30 p. m., the Klezmer Orchestra from the Sejny Theatre will perform a concert at the “Iskra” cinema. Tickets to the concert are available at the cinema cash-desk for the price of 10 zlotys.
