About the Polish Cuba!

The Exhibition “They risked their lives – Poles who saved Jews during the Holocaust” is on display in Cuba. It has been on display at the Jewish Community Centre in Havana since 13 May 2015. It will subsequently visit several more places in the country.

“They risked their lives...” is an exhibition prepared in 2013 by Klara Jackl and Joanna Król from POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Since that time, several dozen presentations have taken place abroad, among others, in Paris, Madrid, Moscow, Vilnius, Tallinn or Dusserldorf. It has been translated into five languages: English, Spanish, German, Russian and Lithuanian.

In Cuba, the exhibition is displayed at the Jewish Community Centre in Havana within the framework of the project “The 8th Week of Polish Culture.” It will be on display there between 13 May and the end of June 2015. In July and August, it will be available for viewing at the Centro Comunitario Hebreo „Or Hadash”, the headquarters of the Jewish sommunity in Santa Clara and then, at Comunidad Hebrea „Hatikva”, the community in Santiago de Cuba.

The exhibition presents histories of the Righteous Among the Nations – Poles who provided aid to prosecuted Jews, risking their own and their families’ lives. The exhibition depicts histories of the Rescuers and the Rescued in the historical context of the occupied Poland. The exhibition explains circumstances and the scale of the provided aid as well as motives of the Righteous.

The exhibition has been prepared on the basis of the testimonies of the Righteous and the Survivors collected as part of “The Polish Righteous – Restoring Memory" online project of POLIN Museum. The histories of aid to Jews are described and published on the website.
