A Havdalah concert: Di Galitzyaner Klezmorim

On Saturday, 31 August, 2013, another Havdalah concert will start at 8:32 pm at the White Stork Synagogue in Wrocław. This time, Di Galitzyaner Klezmorim will perform.

The band is formed by graduates of the Academy of Music in Kraków: Mariola Śpiewak (clarinet), Grzegorz Śpiewak (accordion), Rafał Seweryniak (double bass). They have performed since 1998, inspired by Jewish music. Although their style is within broad confines of Klezmer style, they are not a typical Klezmer band. Their compositions, some of which are their own songs, are of artistic rather than folk nature. Sound, precision and technique are especially important for the artists. Their oeuvre comprises a few hundred concerts in Poland and other European countries, radio, TV and film recordings and three albums.

Di Galitzyaner Klezmorim is the Winner of the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage (Basel 1998) and the winner of the first prize at the First ‘Chopin Open’ Competition for All Instruments Except for the Piano  (Kraków 1999) for their composition entitled ‘Chopin’s Freilach’, based on Chopin’s three mazurkas.

Havdalah concerts have been organised by the Pro Arte 2002 Foundation for many years. The series was inaugurated with the performances by the  last Klezmer musician of the Republic of Poland Leopold Kozłowski and by the Choir of the White Stork Synagogue in Wrocław, directed by Stanisław Rybarczyk, in December 1999. As a  result, the synagogue has become an outstanding concert hall.
