‘Jewish Motifs’ in Nowy Dwór Gdański

From 25th-27th January 2013, Nowy Dwór Gdański will hold screenings of movies that were shown at the Jewish Motifs International Film Festival last year. The event has been initiated by teachers and students of school complex no 2 in Nowy Dwór Gdański, Żuławski Park Historyczny and Klub Nowodworski.

The ‘Jewish Motifs’ festival is one of the most interesting events that promote Jewish culture in Poland. For nine years now, it has been attracting many people from all over the world. The screened films were made in many countries all over the world, including Poland, Germany, Israel, Russia and Canada. They revolve around issues related to contemporary Jewish identity and culture, to the Second World War and the Shoah.

The time of the screenings in Nowy Dwór is by no means random since it coincides with the 68th anniversary of the first Death March from KL Stutthog (25th January) and with the International Holocaust Remembrance Day (27th January). During three days, twenty-one films will be presented as part of two distinct theme blocks. One, entitled Holocuast-Survivors-Remembrance, will be opened with the ‘Rachunek szczęścia’ film, which recollects the dramatic time at KL Stutthof during WWII in the life of former prisoner Stella Czajkowska. The film will be screened twice, on 25th and 27th January. The second block relates contemporary Jewish identity and culture. The screenings will also present a documentary film on Prof. Zygmunt Bauman, one of the most highly recognized humanities scholars of the 20th century and the author of the book ‘Modernity and the Holocaust’.

In addition to films, all guests will have an opportunity to listen to four lectures on the history and culture of Polish Jews. The lectures will be delivered by workers of the Stutthof Museum and teachers from Nowy Dwór Gdański, who investigate and have interest in Jewish themes.

The films will be screened at Żuławski Park Historyczny, 17 Kopernika Street. Free entrance.
