A scholarly-educational conference on teaching about Auschwitz and the Holocaust

The International Centre for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust in the State Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum as well as the Historical Institute at KEN University of Pedagogy in Kraków have the pleasure of inviting you to take part in the second Polish-wide scholarly-educational conference entitled ‘Auschwitz i Holokaust — edukacja w szkole i w miejscu pamięci’ (Auschwitz and the Holocaust – education in schools and memorial sites).

The conference is related to the discussion which took place at the first edition of the conference, which was organized in Oświęcim and in Kraków in October 2008.

The aim of the upcoming conference is to consider the presence of Auschwitz and Holocaust related themes in and outside of school, taking into account recent changes in the core curriculum. The attendees will analyse the role of historical museums, especially Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum, in filling gaps caused by reforms in teaching history in junior high schools in Poland. The meeting will be an opportunity to summarize experiences in teaching about Auschwitz and the Shoah over the last five years.

The conference will deal with the following themes:

  • Pedagogy of memorial sites — theory and practice
  • The authenticity of the place and the word — accounts and narratives
  • Visiting memorial sites: education or tourism?
  • Auschwitz and Holocaust education in the face of the core curriculum reform in Polish schools

If you are interested in participating (paper/short article), send an application and an abstract (max. 500 words) not later than January 30th, 2013 by email to or by post to the following address:

Państwowe Muzeum Auschwitz–Birkenau w Oświęcimiu

ul. Więźniów Oświęcimia 20

32-603 Oświęcim

Due to plans of publishing post-conference materials, texts should be edited in an electronic form. The organizers offer accommodation and board throughout the conference. The costs of travel and insurance, if applicable, are paid by attendees.
