News on Szczebrzeszyn cemetery

The contents of the letter from the mayor of Szczebrzeszyn to chief rabbi of Poland Michael Schudrich about the negelected cemetery are now known. As it turned out, in August 3rd, 2007 the cemetery became a property of the Foundation for Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland. According to the letter from the town hall, the Board of Jewish Communities obliged itself to assign 45 thousand PLN received as a compensation for the synagogue building for renovation of the site. The mayor underlines, that since a couple of years the cemetery is cleaned up by the volunteers from Gesellschaft für christlich-jüdische Zusammenarbeit Dresden (Dresden Association for Christian-Jewish Cooperation) as a symbolic atonement for the wrongs done by the Third Reich during the World War II. Helping them are the students of Szczebrzeszyn primary school. Town hall is interested in cooperating with the Foundation and expects its members to raise some constructive proposals in the matter. Until then, the mayor has turned to the local police with a request to increase their alertness in order to stop the possible perpetrators.
