‘Shalom Bemowo’ Jewish Culture Day
The Cultural Center in Bemowo, one of the Warsaw districts, has the pleasure of inviting you to the Jewish Culture Day called ‘Shalom Bemowo’. The event will take place at 7:30 pm on March 9th and will focus on the centuries-old co-existence of Polish and Jewish cultures. The evening will be highlighted by the ‘Remember a shtetl’ musical performance.
Additionally, the program includes the ‘Warsaw Jews 1861-1943’ photo exhibition mounted by the Jewish Historical Institute, a promotional desk of the Jewish Religions Community in Warsaw (information brochures, folders and other publications; Jewish cuisine), a desk promoting the ‘Karta’ Center Foundation, traditional Jewish song workshops and much more.
The program includes the following:
- ‘Remember a Shtetl’ musical performance
This event recalls the lost world of a Polish town, a Jewish shtetl, where Yiddish mingled with Polish and Chasidic nigunim mixed with a shepherd’s calling. It is a place where you would meet, for instance, a poor Jewish tailor, a country girl, a Chasidic rabbi or a badchen, a folk comedian. The performance will be staged by Mendy Cahan, a director, actor, singer and a Yiddish lecturer and also the founder and Director of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv-based YUNG YIDISH Center for Yiddish Culture together with Eliel, an artist who performs, accompanied by accordion, traditional Jewish songs, Balkan and East European music, which she marries in a multiethnic spirit. She is the originator of multicultural musical project and gives concerts in Europe and Israel.
- traditional Jewish song workshops
The workshops present Chasidic and Shabbat songs in Yiddish, Hebrew and Polish as well as instrumental songs without lyrics (Chasidic nigunim). In order to take part in the workshops, you will need to buy an entrance ticket for the ‘Shalom Bemowo’ event and e-mail an application form to warsztaty@artbem.pl. The application should include your full name, e-mail address and your telephone number. You may sign up not later than March 5th, 2012.
-‘Warsaw Jews 1861-1943’ photo exhibition, made available by the Emanuel Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw
The exhibition displays photographs that portray the life of Jewish residents of Warsaw, the city which, from the mid-19th century to 1943, was home to the largest number of Jewish residents on an European scale, and the second on a worldwide scale, being also a symbol of the Shoah of Warsaw Jews. The organizers of the exhibition desire to present Jews with their social background, doing their everyday chores, at work, in their houses, in all aspects of their lives, such as culture, religion, politics and sport. The exhibition portrays the community which, before the Shoah, made up thirty-five percent of the entire population of Warsaw.
- a promotional desk of the Jewish Religious Community in Warsaw
This desk will offer information materials about the Jewish Religious Community in Warsaw and books published or those financed by the Community, such as “Mówimy po hebrajsku”, "Cadykowy dwór niegdyś w Polsce" and ‘Sidur Szaarej Teszuwa’ , the first Polish edition of a Jewish prayer book from the outbreak of World War II. Additionally, the Jewish Religious Community will arrange a stall with traditional Jewish cuisine, where kosher treats, such as hummus, matza and falafels will be served.
- a desk of the ‘KARTA’ Center
This disk will present ‘Żydzi polscy’ publications, the source of the classic Jewish literature, an authentic portrait of the Holocaust in Poland. Also promotional materials about the ‘KARTA’ Center will be available there.
- the Museum of the History of Polish Jews promotional desk -- the Virtual Shtetl
This desk will offer brochures presenting the Virtual Shtetl portal, postcards, posters and books entitled "Szkoły żydowskie we Wrocławiu" (Eng. Jewish schools in Wroclaw) as well as other things promoting the Museum of the History of Polish Jews and the Virtual Shtetl portal.
