The Museum – Memorial Site in Bełżec runs for the title of the Polish architectural masterpiece

The “Polityka” weekly has announced a competition for the most beautiful and also most unsightly buildings of the last two decades. The Museum – Memorial Site in Bełżec is among the candidates in the first group.

The Museum in Bełżec competes for the masterpiece title against the library of the University of Warsaw, an artificial palm tree on Al. Jerozolimskie Street in Warsaw, the Bydgoszcz seat of BRE Bank, the Manggha Center for Japanese Art and Technology in Krakow and the so-called “shingle house” (Dom z Gontu) in Krakow.

The Museum – Memorial Site in Bełżec was established in 2004 as a branch of the State Museum in Majdanek in Lublin. The main goal of the Bełżec Museum is to document and commemorate the victims of the German death camp in Bełżec. This site, with its unique expressive power and beauty, leaves a great impression on every visitor. Each and every stone reminds viewers of the victims. A crack that breaks the memorial in two in the middle is absolutely impressive and makes one experience the loneliness of victims in the face of death.

The Bełżec museum was designed by sculptors Andrzej Sołyga, Marcin Roszczyki, Zdzisław Pidekoraz, a late professor of the Gdańsk Fine Arts Academy (died in 2006) and by DDJM Architectural Studio in Krakow (Marek DUnikowski, Piotr Czerwiński and Piotr Uherek). In 1997, their common project won the competition for commemorating the annihilation of Jews in Bełżec. Construction works , commissioned by the Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Sites (Rada Ochrony Pamięci Walk i Męczeństwa) and the American Jewish Committee, in cooperation with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC, were completed in 2011.
