The 71th anniversary of the liquidation of the ghetto in Grodzisk Mazowiecki

On February 13th, 2012, Grodzisk Mazowiecki will stage official ceremonies marking the 71th anniversary of the liquidation of the local ghetto. The official opening will start at noon, when flower wreaths will be placed at the monument at Wolności Square. The ceremony will be attended by the state representatives and members of Jewish circles, students and residents of the town.

The Bogoria Radio has given its patronage to the ceremonies and will air radio broadcasts which will be devoted to the history of the local Jewish community in Grodzisk Mazowiecki. On February 6th, 2012, Anna Grzegorzewska and Robert Augustyniak will talk on the radio about the educational project called ‘Ulica Żydowska’ (Jewish Street). Two days later, on February 8th, 2012, the Bogoria Radio will host Jan Jagielski from the Emanuel Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute . On February 9th and 10th, the radio will air an interview with Aleksander Kaczorowski, an author and feature writer who writes about the old Grodzisk, followed by another interview with the local history expert Łukasz Nowacki from the Cultural Center in Grodzisk Mazowiecki.

The program of the ceremonies is as follows:

12 noon – the inauguration of the celebrations at the boundaries of the former ghetto (the end of Żwirki i Wigury Street), welcoming of the guests, a brief outline of the Jewish history in Grodzisk

12:15 pm – a concert of Hebrew songs by H. Rajfer (a heated tent, keyboard), followed by an ecumenical prayer

12:30 pm – a passage along 11 Listopada St. towards the monument of liberty, placing flower wreaths by a delegation of state representatives and guests

12:45 pm – a passage to the Cultural Center (screening of the movie ‘In Darnkess’ for schools)

06:00 pm – an evening memorial about Jewish residents of Grodzisk (presentation of archival materials, interviews with people who still remember Grodzisk before the outbreak of WWII)

The ceremony will be accompanied by an outdoor exhibition called ‘Grodzisk – the town of two nations’. Over the course of the whole event, folders presenting the history of Grodzisk Jews will be distributed.
