A request to the Polish President to establish a Day of the Righteous Among the Nations in Poland

The Association of ‘Children of the Holocaust’, the Jan Karski Association and the Museum of the History of Polish Jews have approached the President of Poland Bronisław Komorowski for submitting in the Sejm, the lower chamber of the Polish Parliament, a proposal to establish the Day of the Righteous Among the Nations in Poland.

In their opinion, this day should be celebrated on September 27th. On this day in 1942, upon the initiative of the Underground Polish State activists, the Provisional Committee to Aid Jews (Tymczasowy Komitet Pomocy Żydom) was established, which became the “Żegota” Council to Aid Jews (Rada Pomocy Żydom “Żegota”) two months afterwards. These organizations united people of distinct outlook and political leanings, motivated by their desire to help Jews in various ways because of religious and humanitarian reasons.

People who risked their lives to help Jews at the time of the Shoah deserve their own place in Polish remembrance and historical debate, say representatives of the said institutions. The Day of the Righteous in Poland would make it easier for younger generations to comprehend more fully the truths about World War II and the Shoah.

The letter was signed by the President of the Management Board of the Association of ‘Children of the Holocaust’ in Poland Anna Drabik, the President of the Karski Association Bogdan Białek and the Director of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews Agnieszka Rudzińska.
