Schmitzler’s people – former residents of prewar Śniatyń

The History Meeting House has the pleasure of inviting you to an exhibition called ‘Ludzie od Schmitzlera: mieszkańcy przedwojennego Śniatynia’ (Eng. Schmitzler’s people – former residents of prewar Śniatyń), which deals with the question of identity in a cultural borderline and with relations among people of various ethnicities, which are portrayed through the history of Śniatyń, a town in Eastern Galicia.

Before the outbreak of World War II, this town was inhabited by a multicultural community, comprising Ukrainians, Jews, Poles, Armenians and Germans. Displayed photographs from family albums show the everyday life of the town, local institutions, relations between neighbors and various ways of spending leisure time at that time. The majority of exhibited pictures were taken by Ignacy Schmitzler, a photographer, whose photo studio was very popular with everyone of all ethnicities and social status. The exhibition is based on the research into memory through modern online communication tools, social community and genealogical Internet portals, above all.

The exhibition has been organized by the Historical Institute at the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN), the Center for Urban History of East Central Europe and the History Meeting House.

The exhibition runs till March 18th, 2012, at the History Meeting House. Free entrance.
