A Torah dating back over one hundred years goes to the Museum of Ceramic Technologies in Koło

A Jewish Torah which is more than one hundred years old has been included in the collection of the historical department of the Museum of Ceramic Technologies in Koło (Muzeum Technik Ceramicznych w Kole), in the Wielkopolska region. This relic, which was presented to the Museum by Krysyna Golig six years ago, was extremely deteriorated at that time. The Torah has been restored by two Toruń art restorers Joanna Konkolewska-Buchholz and Agnieszka Zięba.

The Torah was in desperate need of tedious and time-consuming restoration works. For several months, the aesthetic value and usage features of the parchment were being recovered. The art restorers had to decipher the text, identify the missing excerpts from the Book of Numbers and the Book of Deuteronomy and reconstruct the Torah rolls. The Torah was subsequently disinfected and photographed. Required documentation was compiled, missing fragments were identified and the Torah scroll was cleaned. Some parts of the parchment ribbon were unclogged and its dents were leveled. Worn and missing parchment parts were restored. Presently, the Torah is in a perfect condition and, therefore, is a unique museum relic throughout Poland.

The Museum of Ceramic Technologies is one of a very few institutions of this kind in all of Poland. Beside ceramics, the institution showcases historical monuments of the town. The Museum covered all costs of the restoration works of the Torah.
