Swietokrzyski Sztetl in Chmielnik

In the Chmielnik synagogue, which is currently in the process of being modernized, a new museum called ‘Swietokrzyski Sztetl’ commemorating former Jewish residents of the Kielce region, will be opened. The opening of the museum is scheduled for October, which marks the 70th anniversary of the first deportations of Chmielnik Jews to Treblinka.

Presently, the synagogue is being revitalized and adapted to house a museum and an educational center. In the museum Swietokrzyski Sztetl will present a state of the art narrative concerning the side-by-side co-existence in the former town. The center will deal with the history of twenty significant shtetls in the region and will organize thematic trips throughout the Kielce region. The museum will cooperate with schools, higher education institutions and artistic circles, and will be addressed to local residents, tourists and, above all, to school pupils and students as well as people of Jewish descent.

Chmielnik wants Swietokrzyski Sztetl to become part of itineraries of tourists from abroad. In order to attract them, the exhibition will have a modern form, such as touch pads or glass screens. Traditional artifacts will also be shown. In the center of the synagogue a reconstructed 17th-century bimah, a tent for Torah lecturing and reading, will be arranged. Additionally, the edifice will store a cinema theater and a conference hall. A visit to the museum is supposed to be a journey through history, beginning with the time when first Jewish settlers came to Chmielnik, to the interwar years, the time of the Shoah, the postwar era and contemporary times.
