The 7th International Holocaust Remembrance Day

Last Friday, at the Umschlagplatz memorial, the International Holocaust Remembrance Day was celebrated for the seventh time. Flower wreaths were laid at the monument while representatives of distinct confessions held an ecumenical prayer and Kaddish for all Shoah victims.

Thanks to the UN initiative, this year was the seventh time that the Holocaust victims were commemorated at a special meeting at the Warsaw Umschlagplatz memorial on the day of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Warsaw city streets resounded with the names of perished people, an empty tram labeled with the Star of David ran in the former area of the ghetto, and candles were lit in windows.

The International Holocaust Remembrance Day was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in November 2005. It was agreed that this special day will fall on January 27th, which is the date when the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp was liberated by Soviet troops in 1945. As part of the ceremonies, the action called ‘the flame of memory’ was launched on this day, calling on everyone to kindle a candle in their windows to honor the memory of Holocaust victims.
