One thousand and two German citizens took part in the survey carried out by the Forbs Institute. The poll shows that twenty-one percent of the respondents, who are young German citizens, cannot explain what Auschwitz was. Still, the answer to this question is obvious to almost all elder respondents, while from 90 percent up to 95 percent of people over thirty years old are aware of the meaning of this word. Still, thirty-one percent of all respondents are not able to locate the former Nazi concentration camp, sixty-nine percent give a correct answer, saying that it was established in the Polish territory.

According to this poll, forty-three percent of all respondents admit to not having visited any memorial site in former concentration camps. Sixty five percent opine that the Germans, due to their history, do not bear any particular responsibility toward other nations while thirty-one percent think just the opposite. At the same time, forty percent are in favor of a thick line policy regarding German history, as opposed to 56 percent of the respondents who are against this idea.

This Friday, in the Bundestag, Włocławek-born German literary critic Marcel Reich-Ranicki will deliver a speech marking the International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
