Stories told by absentees – audio guides to the Jewish heritage in towns in the Slaskie province.

‘Opowiesci Nieobecnych’ (Eng. Stories told by absentees) is a series of audio guides to the Jewish legacy in eleven towns in the Slaskie Province, created by the Cukerman’s Gate Foundation. This is probably the only trail in all of Poland that tells the story of local Jewish communities by means of audio guides. As many as sixty four recordings have been made, telling the history and legacy of Jews in eleven towns in Gorny Slask (Upper Silesia) and Zaglebie Dabrowskie regions. This project is a vast audio recording which lasts many hours and is available online on this website . You can download it on your mp3 player to take it with you before going for a walk in Bedzin, Bytom, Chorzow, Czeladz, Dobrowa Gornicza, Gliwice, Katowice, Sosnowiec, Zabrze and Zarki. All audio guides are made available for free under the Creative Commons license.

he guides comprise stories about the Jewish world that was part of the Polish landscape for several centuries. This centuries-old coexistence of Christians and Jews was wiped away in the 1930s. The Opowiesci Nieobecnych project is only one of many laborious educational endeavors that aim to restore and maintain the memory of our former neighbors.

The works on audio guides lasted over six months and engaged sixteen people altogether, among whom there were scholars, Jewish history researchers, musicians and artists. A sound track composed by Raphael Roginski specially for this project is an important part of the recordings, alluding to the traditional Jewish music. The texts in audio books are read by Michal Majnicz, a young and talented actor who regularly performs at the Polish Theater in Wroclaw. Additionally, the Marshal Office of the Slaskie Province and ten-odd town offices and cultural institutions contributed to the creation of the audio guides. The Museum of the History of Polish Jews and the Virtual Shtetl provide media support to the project. The founders of the Cukerman’s Gate Foundation, Karolina and Piotr Jakowenko, are initiators and the main authors of the project.

An inauguration meeting will take place on January 27th, 2012, in Bytom, to mark this event:

The start will be at 4 pm at the market square in Bytom, the meeting point for everyone who would like to take part in the walking tour on the trail of the stories by the absentees (sound system will be provided)
