The renovation of the synagogue in Dąbrowa Tarnowska almost completed
The construction and maintenance works of the 19th-century synagogue in Dąbrowa Górnicza are almost finished. This year, in May, the edifice will be opened to the public. The once derelict building has been in the process of restoration since 2007, which was possible thanks to an EU financial donation.
Under the agreement that was executed between the authorities of Małopolskie Province and the Dąbrowa Górnicza Town and Municipality local government, the synagogue was to be extensively renovated and remodeled so that it would serve as the Center of Meetings of Cultures (Centrum Spotkania Kultur). The prayer room has been so designed to house the exhibition space. An openwork observation landing will enable visitors to marvel at the prayer room, frescoes and the synagogue’s construction from above. This historical building will be equipped with an electronic system enabling both individual visitors and groups of visitors to view the exhibitions in various foreign languages. Additionally, the exhibitions will be supplied with electronic panels.
The newly restored synagogue will be the base of the Museum of Powiśle Dąbrowskie, which, thus far, has occupied the confined rooms in the local library. Additionally, an exhibition on Judaism will be mounted. It will comprise primarily exhibits that come from the house of the last surviving Jew who remained in Dąbrowa Tarnowska, Samuel Roth, who passed away in 1995. He had stored the synagogue’s liturgical objects and other things. Currently, his flat houses the Chamber of Jewish Memory. Concerts, lectures and meetings will be organized in the synagogue. This September, Polish community activists who will take part in the annual World Forum of Polish Community Media are to tour the synagogue.
For three years, the local government in Dąbrowa Tarnowska made repeated attempts to rescue the historical synagogue that was in complete disrepair at that time. The synagogue could eventually be renovated thanks to a donation given by the European Union as part of the Malopolski Regional Operational Program.
