The municipal police arrived at the site to intervene in the case of a homeless dog wandering around the neighborhood. They noticed that one of the flagstones around the building bears carved inscriptions, possibly in Hebrew. In all probability, the matzevot came from the old Jewish cemetery, which was located on Nowy Swiat Street. The necropolis was founded in the 13th Century and was defaced by the Nazis during World War II. The tombstones were then used as a paving material for the embankment of the Rypinkowski canal. Possibly, some streets could have also been paved with the stones. A similar incident took place a few years ago when fragments of matzevot were discovered during the restoration works of gas mains on Kosciuszki Street. The municipal officers handed the case over to the police who are going to look into the matter and explain why the matzevot were paved around the private house.
