An interdisciplinary scholarly conference called ‘The Jewish Child’

The Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage (FODŻ) and the Polish-Jewish Literature Studies at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin invite everyone to take part in the interdisciplinary scholarly conference called ‘Dziecki żydowskie’ (Eng. The Jewish Child), which will take place on October 16th-17th, 2012, at the Synagoga Center in Zamosc.

The following themes will be discussed:

•children’s’ situations in the Jewish community over the course of centuries, their social status, relationships with adults, ways of socialization according to their gender

•children and young people in Judaism

•the meaning and the role of the child in a Jewish family

•rites related to various stages of children’s lifes

•rearing and education of Jewish children; the influence of distinct Judaism branches (Chasidism, for example) as well as the impact of social and political movements (such as assimilation and Zionism)

•Jewish children’s and youth organizations

•symbolical childhood images in culture and mass awareness

•the childhood culture: Jewish art for children and young people, Jewish children’s literature and magazines

•the world of a child: children’s interests, games and plays, children’s folklore

•the martyrdom of Jewish children at the time of the Shoah

If you are interested in taking part in the conference, please send us your application not later than June 15th, 2012, in form of a one-page synopsis of your lecture together with a completed participation form to the following e-mail address of the Polish-Jewish Literature Studies at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin: plpz@kul.pl.
