Jewish cemetery open on All-Saints

From Friday, October 30th, the gates of Kalisz Jewish cemetery are open to general public. Although there is no such custom in Jewish culture, the city’s inhabitants come to light the candles on the graves and visit the Kalisz Jews Remembrance Hall. For many of them it’s a way to pay their respects and commemorate the onetime inhabitants of Kalisz, most of whom were Jewish. Asked about the Wrocław Jewish Community’s attitude toward the 5-year old tradition, the cemetery’s custodian responded: “The rabbis have nothing against the lights and prayers from people adhering to other religions”. The cemetery on Rypinek is recognized as the oldest Jewish necropolis in Poland.
