The New Muranów Guide

On Thursday, January 12th, at 8 pm, a promotional meeting of the new guide of Muranow, shown from the perspective of its residents, will take place at Stacja Muranow. The meeting will be attended by the Mayor of Srodmiescie Warsaw District Wojciech Bartelski; Beata Chomątowska, the author of the book and the President of the Stacja Muranow Association; Michal Radwanski, a photographer and co-author of the book and Karolina Abdel Małek, the co-author of the book and the grantee in the Srodmiescie district.

The guide has been created thanks to an artistic grant funded by the Srodmiescie Warsaw district. The book is an artistic and photographic journey through various Muranow sites. Muranow’s southern part was built from the ruins of the Warsaw ghetto and now Muranow, one of Warsaw districts, is the only memorial residential area in the world. Postwar blocks of flats remind of the past of this place, which is hidden beneath pavements, lawns and roads, the layout of which is different from their former routes in the past. Although the oldest part of Muranow was built in the era of socialist realism, Western patterns of a neighboring entity were also adopted, hence its air of privacy and a charm of a small town. In the past, Muranow streets resounded mostly with Yiddish, Hebrew, Russian and Esperanto, the latter of which was created in Muranow. Over postwar years, the memory of the district, where Jewish residents formed a majority, was being replaced with Polish martyrdom symbols. However, it was all in vain. Suffice it to say that presently, the Museum of the History of Polish Jews has been erected in the very heart of this district.

The authors of the guide encourage you to stroll around the Muranow residential area with the ‘Muranow’ unique mini album, in which photographs are equally as important as the text. This is the first publication of this kind which deals with Muranow.
