The 15th Day of Judaism

January 11th will inaugurate the 15th edition of the Day of Judaism. This year, the events have been organized under the bannr of the following quotation from the Book of Genesis: ‘Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome’. As part of this festival, many interesting meetings, concerts and lectures will be staged.

On the first day, a debate called ‘Walczyłeś z Bogiem i zwyciężyłeś’ (Eng. You have struggled with God and have overcome) will be held between the Poznan Archbishop Stanislaw Gądecki and the Chief Rabbi of Poland Michael Schudrich. This meeting will be accompanied by a presentation of the ‘Jan Pawel II’ painting from the collection of the Signum Foundation. On the following day, the exhibition called ‘Judaizm dawniej i dziś’ (Eng. Judaism in the past and present) will be opened. Scriptures about Judaism, faith, rites and symbols, which have been hired from the collections of the Raczynski Library and from private individuals, will be shown. You will have the opportunity to see books, including Talmuds, Torahs, Zohars and other prayer books and lexicons with parchment fragments of the Torah scroll . This exhibition will also present other artefacts, such as an original kippah, tallites and philacteries. The explanatory labels will be in Polish and Hebrew.

On Saturday, January 14th, you will be able to take part in the ‘Poizn, tej’ location-based game following the traces of Poznan Jews. The aim of the game is to bring back the memory of the history of the Poznan Jewish community. The game is addressed to all lovers of the town’s history and Jewish culture. The participants will find places related to Jewish culture (some of which do not exist any longer and have been preserved only in historical illustrations). The game starts at 10 am at the symbolical grave of Akiva Eger in the former site of the Jewish cemetery. The organizers will provide food and drinks. The first three winners will receive attractive rewards.

Additionally, interesting concerts will be also organized. On Sunday, the ‘Amadeus’ Polish Radio Chamber Orchestra, directed by Agnieszka Duczmal, will take place. The repertoire of the concert is an allusion to opuses by renowned 20th-century composers, whose roots intertwine with Jewish tradition. On Wednesday, on the final day of the festival, the ‘Klezmafour’ band will perform. The band has been founded in Lublin and its members derive their inspiration from the history of their hometown, where once musical traditions from the East, West and South would blend.
