Yarkoni sang for Israeli troops as early as the beginning of 1948 and was a widely recognized singer throughout Israel. In 1998, she won the Israeli Prize for Hebrew Song. Yarkoni was survived by three daughters, eight grandchildren and many great grandchildren. The date of the funeral has not been established yet, but what is known is that she will be buried next to her husband Shaike Yarkoni in the Kiryat Shaul cemetery in central Israel.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak issued a statement on Sunday, mourning Yarkoni: “Yafa Yarkoni has escorted Israel, since its establishment, with her songs and she was a symbol of the beautiful Zionist and moral Israel”. Opposition leader Tzipi Livni said that Yarkoni was one of Israel’s greatest singers. “Her face and her voice crossed generations of Israelis who were raised on her songs. Yafa Yarkoni was one of the strongest symbols of Zionism – along with other singers of her time she helped shape the soundtrack of the country. Her death is a great loss to Israeli culture. May her memory be blessed.”
