Our Israelis. Polish Jews in the state of Israel

"Nasi Izraelczycy – Losy polskich Żydów w Izraelu" (Eng. Our Israelis – the history of Polish Jews in Israel) is the title of an outdoor exhibition that was mounted in Krakowskie Przedmieście St. in Warsaw last Monday to present renowned Israeli citizens whose life stories are related to Poland.

Prof. Władysław Bartoszewski, Ambassador of Israel Zvi Rav Ner and Andrzej Biernat, acting as the Chief Director of the National Archives, took the floor at the official opening of the exhibition.

Thanks to the exhibition, the public will realize the significant impact of  Polish tradition and culture on the history of Israel and how important are their Polish roots for Israeli citizens. The highlight of the event will be a presentation of the founding fathers of the state of Israel, whose bonds with Poland are very strong.

The exhibition "Nasi Izraelczycy – Losy polskich Żydów w Izraelu" is composed of twenty charts which present biographies, documents and pictures of prominent Polish-born citizens.

Among them there are both world-famous names such as David Ben-Gurion, Menachem Begin and Shimon Peres and names of Israelis from academic and cultural circles with which Poles may be not so familiar. These include prose writer and translator Uri Olev, composer and singer Chawa Alberstein and actress Lia Koenig Sztolper, who has won popularity among Israelis. A part of the exhibition also portrays Jews who play a leading role in contemporary Israel and whose parents spent a few years in Poland. It is enough to mention such names as Edgar Keret, Amos Oz and Dorit Benisch.
