History

Andrzej Potocki

In 1921, 126 Jews who belonged to the Jewish Community of Lancut lived in the village. More than 40 Jews were shot to death at the local “kopisko” (plot of land in the village designated for burying animals): 28 September 1942 – 10, 7 October 1942 – 14 from Kanczuga, 18 November 1942 – 18 from Markowa. Due to giving shelter to a Jewish family on 3 March 1944, the Nazis murdered the Ulmow family of eight members, including four children aged one to eight years old along with the Jews they were hiding. In Markowa 17 Jews who had been given shelter by Polish families survived the Nazi occupation.
In nearby Husow on 1 October and 8 December 1942, 17 and 18 Jews were murdered in two successive executions.
