History

MartaD.

Pierwsze informacje o Żydach w Kobieli pochodzą z XVIII wieku. Niezależna gmina żydowska powstała w 1853 roku.

Społeczność żydowska Kołbieli rozwijała się dynamicznie. W 1921 roku stanowiła ok. 65% ogółu mieszkańców. W miejscowości znajdowała się drewniana synagoga i cmentarz.

W utworzonym w 1941 roku getcie zamieszkiwało ok. 1000 osób. Likwidacja getta miała miejsce we wrześniu 1942 roku – mieszkańców wywieziono do obozu zagłady w Treblince.

Local history

Wydawnictwo Naukowe PWN /

Kołybiel, a noble village, was first mentioned at the beginning of the 15th century. It was granted town rights in 1532 and confirmed in 1642. It was a property of the Jasieńczyk-Kołybielski and from 1806 of the Zamoyski family. Since 1795 the town was under the Austrian rule, since 1809 part of the Duchy of Warsaw, and since 1815 under the Russian dominion (The Kingdom of Poland). The town rights were withdrawn in 1870. A railway line was opened in 1877. There was a large Jewish community in Kołybiel. During the German occupation (November 1941–September 27, 1942) there was a ghetto there (ca. 1,000 people were deported to the concentration camp in Treblinka). Partisan groups of the Home Army and Peasants Battalions were active in the area. On 28-29 July 1944 heavy battle between Soviet armored troops and German troops took place. On 15 May 1958 half of the town buildings were destroyed due to a hurricane. There was a neo-Gothic Holy Trinity Church in Kołybiel (1896–99, J.P. Dziekoński). In a nearby village Stara Wieś there was a palace of J. Zamoyski (1866–78, L. Marconi).
