The first historical record of Jews living in the village of Adamów dates from 1872. At that time, there were already more than one hundred Jewish inhabitants there, who constituted about 18% of the total population of the center. This may indicate that the Jewish settlement in this place started much earlier.

 The Jews of Adamów came under the kehilla of Kock, though the village had many close ties to Łuków. Toward the end of the 19^th century, the Jewish population of Adamów, which had 500 members and its own synagogue and cemetery, met all of the requirements needed to be granted full autonomy. Economically and demographically, the Jewish community had been developing at a fast rate, such that at the beginning of the 1920s, the Jews made up one-third of the total population of the center. Apart from the synagogue and cemetery, the kehilla also owned a ritual slaughterhouse and a mikveh. In the years 1928-1930, J. Grynwald was a rabbi here. The kehilla employed one teacher which shows that alongside private cheders, there was also a Talmud Torah here which provided education for the poorest boys.

Lokowany jako miasto w maju 1539 roku pod nazwą Jadaromin, na podstawie przywileju króla Zygmunta Starego, był początkowo własnością rodu Rusieckich. Około 1543 roku miejscowość otrzymała swą obecną nazwę, zaś w 1545 roku utworzono tu parafię i wzniesiono drewniany kościół. W późniejszym okresie Adamów należał do Firlejów, w XVIII i XIX wieku – do Krasieńskich, a następnie do Czartoryskich. Po upadku powstania styczniowego, w 1869 roku Adamów stracił prawa miejskie. Podczas kampanii wrześniowej na terenie gminy toczyły się walki bitwy pod Kockiem. W 1943 roku, w wyniku wielkiego pożaru, spaliło się całe centrum Adamowa, w tym budynek Urzędu Gminy, szkoła oraz liczne domy mieszkalne. Od 1975 roku gmina Adamów znajdowała się w granicach województwa siedleckiego, by po reformie administracyjnej w 1999 wrócić do województwa lubelskiego. Obecnie wieś liczy ok. 2.100 mieszkańców .
